Hi Swimwear and Lingerie Friends.

I am loving this sunshine trend… it really beats the heck out of the greyness that overshadowed most of January, February and March!

Well, today is “Fitting Tip Thursday” and I have an excellent little post to clarify some of the International sizing confusion.

As I have mentioned in the past there really isn’t a standard, agreed upon, sizing for women’s bras or lingerie. Each company defines its fit as it chooses. Often bras from the same brand/manufacturer in the same size but different styles will fit so completely differently that the consumer must opt for completely different sizes.

Confusing, right?

Annoying? TOTALLY!

And get this… if you are over a D cup, the sizing is even more unreliable because while some companies increase cup size by 1 inch (2 cm) some French designers increase cup sizes by 3 cm instead… So an American B cup and a French B cup could be two very different sizes.

No fears, the lovely folks over at HerRoom have a lovely little chart to convert band size measurements all ready to go that is clear as day and should certainly make it easier for you to make your best guess.

HOLY CRAP!!!!

Can you believe the range of cup sizes?

I hadn’t realized that my size could vary quite that much depending on where I was ordering from. I had assumed that once I had the UK and French sizing down pat, I would be okay.

Not so much. Glad I found out now, because Italy (Laura Biagiotti)and Australia (Elegantly Scant) have some stunning lingerie, that I have been itching to get my hands on!

I actually had a bit of a giggle moment picturing a world traveler flying across Europe and being challenged in customs and told she was wearing the wrong size in each place… snicker… {I wonder if my sense of humour will ever grown up? Nah}

But let’s not get discouraged. After all, now that we can order through secure webpages and have fast, mostly affordable, shipping, there are still plenty of reasons to go lingerie shopping online. Throw in the fact that Australian lingerie designers, Italian lingerie designers and the UK folk all do it their own way too and you may feel a bit lost.

Particularly if you live in an area that has a limited selection or if you happen to be one of those sizes that most major Western Department stores don’t think exist, ie: anything over a D….sigh….why do they hate the curvy girl? Also try to get anything in less than a 32 or 20 band size and you may as well try to paddle up the proverbial creek with out a paddle.

I do think that it is essential to be able to try things on before you pay for them. How do you do that through a monitor you may be asking?

Well don’t be difficult! Of course you can’t virtually try something on, but you can try on lots of styles from a certain brand and take notes on how they fit and what you liked or didn’t like so that you can make informed choices when ordering that brand/style online.

If in doubt there are always those handy dandy customer care phone lines ready and waiting to help you. Or better yet, check out the product reviews on lingerie blogs and lingerie forums to see what other folk thought. You’ll be wearing it for a good chunk of your day and spending your hard earned money on it, may as well take a few moments and make sure you find one that will work for you!

Cheers,

Maggie
