When I was pregnant with my first little one, the options for lingerie were limited by both my mind and my wallet.

You see, I had this ridiculous perception that my newly expanding figure was something to be hidden and down played. I was embarrassed by the overt fertility that I thought I would be flaunting. I believed my body should be celebrated only for it’s ability to create children and not for it’s innate sexiness. Absolute balderdash, I know?

Letting It All Hang Out With Pride

I bought bra’s of the industrial, granny genre rather than items that would allow me to showcase my blossoming curves. The old lady panties that I paired those-over-the-shoulder-boulder-holders were hideous. High waist-ed, made to sit at the belly button and with a stretchy lace band that left cruel indents on my little bump of a tummy. My body was changing and felt completely alien to me. I wasn’t sure how I felt about it anymore, or if it was solely mine anymore. I had always been a fashionable woman and was vastly dismayed by what the retailers were offering as “stylish” pregnancy wear.

Looking in the mirror at my visible belly and engorged breasts encased in that nasty off white all cotton, full coverage, clip up cup bra and super large panties, I felt completely de-sexualized. My husband was kind, but his solution to the problem (just stay home and be naked all the time… that is waaaay more sexy) really didn’t help one iota.

Now who wouldn’t feel powerful and glamorous schlepping around in those underclothes? No me for one. To be honest, it is amazing that we ever had a second child!

After my little one was born, I bought the same hideously constructed nursing bras and continued to wear my stretchy panties all the while bemoaning the fact the cute lingerie didn’t come in a nursing variety or the size of my nursing bosom.

I began to wonder…. why the heck wasn’t there a better option? Something that isn’t meant to look like a medieval torture device. Something that would help to show off my lovely assets and keep them supported and well decorated at the same time?

Apparently I wasn’t the only one wondering these things; There are several absolutely fabulous brands of maternity specific lingerie available for all the expectant mums to choose from. Today I would like to look at HOTmilk

The design team behind HOTmilk had much the same epiphany as I did, however, Lisa actually followed through with it;

“The inspiration came when I was pregnant with my first child. I have three girls aged 4, 3 and 10 months. After a lifetime of wearing beautiful lingerie I was horrified with the maternity lingerie I was faced with. I was pregnant – not 90!” – Lisa

“Having been friends with Lisa for 12 years, I was thrilled when she shared her inspiration with me. I came on board with her to help bring this brilliant concept to fruition and what a fantastic journey we are on together!” – Ange

HOTmilk Lingerie is a New Zealand based company which has grown rapidly to become a global leader in only three years. Along this remarkable and eventful journey – which we sometimes like to the excitement of a pregnancy! – we have both had children and know the benefits of wearing HOtmilk firsthand. It has certainly not been easy but it has been challenging and rewarding – just like motherhood! – Lisa and Ange

Their blog is written in the style of that knowledgeable best friend that refuses to let you cop out and feel down.

They have a section devoted to helping men buy lingerie for their expectant partners (Why oh why doesn’t every other retailer’s site do this too?), which is pure genius!

All in all, they are a company hell bent on making pregnancy and breastfeeding a little more sensual and a lot less repressed.

I can only say, on behalf of all women, everywhere, “Thank you Hot Milk, Thank you sooooo much!”

Cheers,

Maggie
