Hello Swimwear and Lingerie Buddies.
Happy Wordless Wednesday!
Hello Swimwear and Lingerie Friends.
Happy Totally Retro Tuesday.
So, what do we all think about this lingerie ad then? Take a moment and look at it and then let me know if there is anything that stands out for you.
Okay, enough looking, let’s get down to the talking part shall we?
I love art deco. I am completely enamored by the long willowy silhouettes and the way the curved lettering echoes the bizarrely exaggerated positions of the women.
The Kestos Bra was actually quite a ground breaking bra for it’s era, the 1930′s. It was one of the first bras to have two distinct cups and featured an elastic wraparound band that attached to buttons on the bra, allowing the wearer to modify the placement of the band to accommodate some of the racier 1930′s low-backed styles.
That’s all pretty cool right? So, if I love art deco and I’m a fan of the innovative designs of Kestos lingerie… then what the heck is my problem?
Well, you see, initially, I loved that the women were interacting with the brand and had their hands intertwined with the lettering. I thought it was pretty inspired that they showed their customers interacting with their logo. Then I got that little bit of a ‘Harumph’ kind of feeling in the back of my throat. The feeling that something was off, something just wasn’t sitting well with me.
I realized that the lovely ladies, langorously lazing around, with their hands strewn carelessly around the letters of the brand were somehow, reminding me of people stuck in the olden years example of a pillory or the stocks. They seemed to be restrained, which would explain the unnatural postures of their bodies.
Now, I’ll admit that it’s probably a really huge stretch to say this, not to mention the lifeless, dehumanized look of the women is a common characteristic of art deco pictures. Nevertheless, it leaves a rather ick sensation in the pit of my stomach. Which is a shame considering how liberating the Kestos bra appears to be for women in the ’30′s.
What about you buds? Does it bug you too or am I just waaaay too sensitive today?
